What is Underlayer?

Research Database

A growing library of structured claims, each one traceable to its sources. As researchers and journalists contribute to the database, it becomes more comprehensive and more useful for everyone.

Search the full record by keyword, tag, or theme, and bookmark the claims most relevant to your work.

Published Dossiers

Bring together the verified claims from your research into a citable dossier with its own permanent link.

Attach it to a published piece, share it with colleagues, or publish it openly as a standalone record. Your sources and evidence remain accessible long after the story runs.

Underlayers

Curated topic pages that collect verified claims around a single subject, whether a long-running investigation, a political figure, or a contested event.

Where a single article captures a moment, an Underlayer builds the full record, linking claims across time through the organizations and individuals they share.

Visual tools surface those connections, showing how different topics intersect in ways that linear reporting rarely can.

Peer-Review System

Only claims that have passed review appear on Underlayer. Beyond an initial set of verified facts, every new submission goes through a structured review before it becomes part of the shared record.

Each claim and source carries labels showing exactly what scrutiny it has received, so readers always know how much weight to give a fact.

Cooperative Setup

Underlayer will be built as a cooperative. This means that members will own the platform and that its mission will be locked against outside capture.

We believe that research should stay independent of commercial and editorial pressure.
